Last '800 hand made embroidered tablecloth with napkins

Byssus tablecloth hand embroidered in Pistoia in last 1800. The set includes the tablecloth, 12 dinner napkins, 12 tea napkins and 6 bred napkins

Byssus or sea silk is a very particular fabric obtained from a filament produced by a mollusk. It is a rare and precious fabric, because for its production it is necessary a considerable number of shells. It was once used by kings and princes for the production of very expensive clothes, gloves and as a coating for armors. This soft and comfortable fabric was very appreciated by the nobles of the past.

The production of byssus is laborious and requires many processing steps. After harvesting, it must be cleaned and combed several times, soaked in lemon juice and finally spun by hand.

The most important centers of byssus harvesting and processing were located in southern Italy, especially in Sardinia and Apulia.

In order to obtain 1 kg of raw byssus and thus produce 200-300 grams of sea-silk, up to 1'000 shells are required.
